      Reviews:

      • Jeb Dunnuck: The 2015 Roc de Cambes looks to be the star of these three vintages. Made from 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, it’s a surprisingly structured, tight, vibrant effort that has a big perfume of black raspberries, cigar tobacco, spring flowers, and graphite. With plenty of tannins and beautiful purity of fruit as well as integrated acidity, it needs 3-4 years of bottle age and will keep for 15+ years.
      • Decanter: From cask, shortly before bottling. Dense and, unsurprisingly, closed on the nose, showing oaky black fruits and a hint of espresso. It has a voluptuous palate backed by very ripe tannins. It has plenty of concentration and spice, with a taut structure and ample energy. Good, if not exceptional, acidity but the tannic finish is immensely long.

      Producer Information

Roc de Cambes is a premier wine producer from the Cotes de Bourg appellation in Bordeaux. It produces a Merlot-based Bordeaux blend as well as the Domaine de Cambes, that is sold as Bordeaux AOC. The historic château was purchased by François Mitjavile, owner of Saint-Emilion's esteemed Château Le Tetre-Rôtebouef, in 1988. Constructed in the mid to late 1700s, the château required extensive modernizations and renovations. Vineyards are situated on south-facing slopes near the Gironde, and cover 12 hectares (30 acres) of land. Vines are planted to deep clay-limestone soils and are close to 50 years of age and therefor produce low yields with concentrated flavor compounds. Merlot comprises well over a half of the total plantings here at around 85 percent, with a smaller portion of Cabernet Sauvignon. The estate's wine is vinified in temperature-controlled concrete tanks before barrel maturation in 50 percent new French oak for 18 to 24 months.
