Its dense purple color is accompanied by sweet blackberry and blackcurrant fruit intermixed with notions of graphite, chocolate and vanillin. Lush, pure and voluptuously textured, it is an irresistible Cabernet.

• James Suckling: A dense, layered red with a solid core of fruit and tannins. Blue fruit. Cedar and mushroom undertones. A full and compact wine. Needs time to soften. One of the best of the vintage.

• Jeb Dunnuck: The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain comes mostly from the estate vineyard (there’s a small part from the True vineyard) and it appears to be a classic Howell Mountain Cabernet. Blue fruits, ample minerality, and some violet and mountain scrub brush notes all flow to a medium to full-bodied, layered 2017 that has fine tannins and a terrific sense of elegance.

Outpost Wines is a winery based in the Howell Mountain subregion of California's Napa Valley. The high-elevation estate is located 2200ft (670m) above sea level and is suited to the production of red varieties including its flagship Zinfandel, as well as Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah and Grenache. Outpost was established in 1998 and has been run by Kathy and Frank Dotzler since 2003. The Howell Mountain estate spans 17 hectares (42 acres) and is planted with 11 hectarees (28 acres) of organically farmed vines on red rocky soils. The site's high-altitude location sits above the Napa Valley fog line, giving vines longer exposure to the sun for slow, even ripening. Each variety is handpicked and vinified separately, and bottled unfined and unfiltered. The Dotzlers own a second vineyard on Howell Mountain, True Vineyard, planted to four hectares (9 acres) of Bordeaux varieties. Outpost produces two wines from this estate: a 100 percent Cabernet Sauvignon and the Immigrant, a red blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc.
