• Wine Advocate: The bouquet explodes from the glass with scents of maraschino, raspberry preserve, cold granite and orange sorbet - very vivacious and brimming over with energy, lending it a youthful persona. Interestingly, it mutates in the glass, becoming more animal-like and almost Northern Rhône-like. The palate is very well balanced with rounded, quite lush red and black fruit married with a keen line of acidity. This Parantoux is all about generosity, layering the mouth with lascivious red fruit all bounded by a tight leash of mineralité and an ash-like note right on the tip of the finish.

• John Gillman: The wine is still quite defined by its generous serving of smoky new oak, but there is a lot of fine fruit, spice and soil tones here to balance out the new oakiness. The nose wafts from the glass in a complex blend of raspberries, red plums, Vosne spices, venison, lovely soil tones, coffee and plenty of smoky new wood. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and plush on the attack, with excellent complexity and balance, modest, well-integrated tannins, good acids and fine length and grip on the voluptuous finish.

Producer Information

Often mentioned in the same breath as his famed uncle (the late Henri Jayer) Emmanuel Rouget is a well-regarded Burgundy producer in his own right. Having taken over the farming of the Jayer brothers' (Henri, Lucien and Georges) holdings, Rouget produces sought-after Pinot Noirs from sought-after vineyards from his base in Flagey-Echézeaux. Rouget's best-known wines include the famed Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru Cros Parantoux, famously planted during 1940s by Jayer after it had been abandoned in the wake of the phylloxera devastation at the beginning of the 20th Century. Rouget controls two thirds of the one hectare (2.5 acre) site with Méo-Camuzet taking the remainder. Other prized holdings include 1.4 hectares (3.4 acres) in Echézeaux and a small plot in the premier cru Les Beaux Monts (which Rouget labels as "Les Beaumonts"). He also has vineyards at village-level in Vosne-Romanée, Savigny-lès-Beaune and Nuits-Saint-Georges as well as Côte de Nuits-Villages. Rouget began working in vineyards in 1976, when he was hired by his uncle Henri Jayer, one of the most prominent and critically lauded winemakers in Burgundy. Jayer's wines have been some of the most expensive Pinot Noir expressions and the Henri Jayer Richebourg Grand Cru is easily one of the most expensive wines in the world.
