Enormously complex, dense and chewy, with lots of pepper, spice, roasted coffee, dried berry and cigar box nuances that are full-bodied and turn meaty, with beef carpaccio and pepper steak-like scents cloaked in gripping tannins, but the flavors shine through.

• Wine Advocate: Take, for example, the 2008 Pinot Noir Rosella's Vineyard. Dark plum/garnet in color, with an evolved but super-complex nose of smoked herbs, sweet black cherries, plum, and pomegranate as well as forest floor, the wine hits the palate with a sweet, expansive, savory mouthfeel, full-bodied flavors with a touch of smoky wood in the background, and a broad, long finish that is fresh and authoritative.

• Wine Enthusiast: Just exquisite, combining power with elegance to produce a truly great Pinot Noir. The vineyard is in the heart of the appellation. The cool climate has made it dry, crisp and silky, but it shows powerfully concentrated cherry, pomegranate, mocha and bacon flavors, with overlays of smoky sandalwood.

Roar Wines (often stylised as ROAR Wines or simply ROAR) is a wine producer based in the Santa Lucia Highlands AVA of California. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay represent the majority of output, with smaller amounts of Viognier, Grenache and Syrah also produced. Named partly for the Monterey Bay winds that can be heard throughout the vineyards, Roar Wines was founded by the Franscioni family (Gary, Rosella, Adam and Nick) who have been involved in farming the Santa Lucia Highlands for over 100 years and across four generations. They planted the first of their vineyards in 1996, naming it after Rosella, and in 1997, Gary’s Vineyard was established with the assistance of local grape growers the Pisoni family. Two more vineyards have since been planted, the Sierre Mar Vineyard which sits at an altitude of 1000ft (305 meters) and the Soberanes Vineyard which was again established in collaboration with the Pisonis. Roar also source Pinot Noir fruit from the Pisoni's own vineyard. The vineyards vary from having sandy loam topsoils to decomposed granite or gravelly loam. The wines typically spend time in French oak.
