Red Wine: 2016 | Domaine de l'Arlot | Nuits St Georges Clos des Forets St Georges

The nose is overtly floral in character though the dark berry fruit aromas are much earthier and decidedly less spicy. The sleekly muscular, intense and broad-shouldered flavors possess outstanding mid-palate density and power before culminating in a robust, firmly structured and wonderfully complex finale.

      Reviews:

      • Wine Advocate: The 2016 Nuits St Georges 1er Cru Clos des Forêts St-Georges includes 50% whole cluster with 50% new oak. This has the most precise bouquet from Domaine de l’Arlot this year: exquisite scents of wild strawberry, cranberry, wild hedgerow and just a hint of graphite. It feels tightly wound at first but gathers pace with aeration in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin. This feels crisp and linear, and there's good depth of flavor as this gently grips the mouth. Red fruit dovetail into black toward the graphite-tinged finish, the persistence very long. There is palpable energy in situ that should see it age for two decades.
      • Vinous: The freshest and darkest color so far among these '16s: deep red with ruby highlights. Slightly reduced aromas of black raspberry, musky espresso and dark chocolate. Boasts a penetrating sweetness and almost liqueur-like ripeness but with enough energy and muscularity to avoid coming off as heavy; this wine has 14% alcohol, vs. 13.5% for the estate's other crus, but it's buffered by sound acidity. Quite rich and full, with licorice and spice notes from the stems contributing lift. This broad, slightly aggressive wine finishes with a firm tannic spine for aging.

      Producer Information

Domaine de l'Arlot is a Burgundy producer in the Côte de Nuits known for its Pinot Noir from select vineyard sites. It is based just south of the township of Nuits Saint-Georges and has vines in several prestigious vineyards including in two premier cru monopole vineyards – Clos de Forets Saint-Georges and Clos de l'Arlot. The l'Arlot vineyard was established in the 18th Century when the owner of the property built the encircling wall. Domaine de l'Arlot was expanded by the négociant Jules Belin after he bought it in 1891. The modern incarnation stems from the sale of the property by Belin's heirs to French investment firm AXA Millésimes, which also owns several other wine estates including Château Pichon-Longueville Baron in Bordeaux. AXA further expanded Domaine de l'Arlot's holdings with plots in the premier cru Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots vineyard and the grand cru Romanée Saint-Vivant. Pinot Noir is the dominant variety across most of the domaine's vineyard holdings, and accounts for its best-known wines. Domaine de l'Arlot also makes small amounts of Chardonnay, including a rare example from Clos de l'Arlot. Farming practices have been organic since 2000 and biodynamic since 2003.
