Producer Information
Manso de Zúñiga is a wine producer in the Rioja region of Spain making wine under the Conde de Hervías (Rioja Alavesa) and Mencos (Rioja Alta) banners. Both labels are regarded as providing elegant, clasically-styled wines. Owner Iñigo Manso de Zúñiga Ugartechea studied enology at the University of Bordeaux, and makes the wines with his wife Yolanda García Viadero. Together they tend plots of pre-phylloxera vines around their home in the village of Torremontalbo. The fruit for the top two Conde de Hervías bottlings comes from two adjacent organically farmed bush trained vineyards in this area, situated at 475 meters altitude (1,560ft). One of these, Las Arenillas, is among the most famous vineyards in Rioja. Here the vines, on their original rootstocks, were planted in 1864 by Don Nicanor Manso de Zúñiga, Count of Hervías and his brother Don Victor Cruz, who founded the enology station at Haro. The sandy soil protected the vines against phylloxera. The eponymous flagship wine is only made in tiny quantities in the best vintages. It is mostly Tempranillo with a ten percent component of Graciano. The "second" wine, also made only in select vintages is Torre del Conde. It is produced from Tempranillo and Graciano from the Llano Alto vineyard, planted next door in 1958 on iron-rich clay, and a portion of Las Arenillas. Trinidad is the junior wine. As the name suggests it comes from three vineyards in Torremontalbo, on three different soil types - those mentioned above and Romero, on chalky clay. All parcels of Tempranillo are planted with the original 1864 clone. The Mencos wines come from La Rioja Alta. The Mencos name comes from Iñigo's mother's side of the family.
