- Wine Enthusiast: Big and firm, quite tannic even, and very rich and dry. This is a good, solid, powerful wine, with great finishing acidity.
Producer Information
Symington Family Estates is a major company based in the Douro region of Portugal. It owns several major Port houses and wine labels, including Dow's, Warre's, Graham's and Altano. The Symington family have been in the Douro since 1882 when Andrew James Symington, aged 19, sailed to Porto from Scotland to work for Graham's. Five years later he was operating as an independent shipper, and in 1891 he married Beatrice Leitão de Carvalhosa Atkinson. The current generation of Symingtons can trace their history via the van Zeller and Köpke families to the very beginnings of the Port wine trade in the 17th Century. Symington became a partner in Warre & Co. in 1905, and became the sole owner in 1908. In 1912, he became a shareholder in Dow's, which was eventually bought by the family 50 years later. Symington Family Estate acquired Graham's in 1970, Quinta do Vesuvio in 1989 and Cockburn's in 2010. The first Douro DOC wines, Altano and Chryseia (made in conjunction with the Prats family of Bordeaux), were launched in 2000. The Symingtons are one of the eleven Primum Familiae Vini ("First Families of Wine"), a business organization founded in 1991 which also includes producers such as Vega Sicilia, Pol Roger, Torres and Baron Philippe de Rothschild.
