      Producer Information

Château Pavie Macquin is a producer of Merlot-based red wines in the Saint-Émilion appellation with premier grand cru classé B status. It is owned by the Corre-Macquin family. There are 15 hectares (37 acres) under vine on the clay-limestone plateau, with an asteriated limestone topsoil (meaning a high content of fossilized starfish). Plantings are 84 percent Merlot, 14 percent Cabernet Franc and two percent Cabernet Sauvignon. The Grand Vin of Pavie Macquin is aged for 16 to 20 months in barrel, with 50 percent new wood. A second wine is produced under the Les Chênes de Macquin label ("the Oaks of Macquin"). Total production is aound 70,000 bottles per vintage. Originally, Château Pavie Macquin was part of the estate of the 19th Century négociant Ferdinand Bouffard. It was bought by Albert Macquin, who achieved individual acclaim as a pioneer in the use of grafted roots stocks to combat the phylloxera epidemic. Pavie Macquin now borders two other parts of the original Pavie estate, Château Pavie and Château Pavie-Decesse. During the 1990s, the quality of Château Pavie Macquin improved significantly. This was attributed to the additions of Stéphane Derencourt and Nicolas Theinpont to the winemaking team. As a result, the château was promoted from grand cru classé to premier grand cru classé B in the controversial 2006 review of the Saint-Émilion classifications. After several other producers challenged the impartiality of the judges, the classification was declared void in 2009 and the 1996 review was to be used. In 2012, a new classification maintained the premier grand cru classé B status of Pavie Macquin (however this too has been challenged).
