This wine has a dark ruby color and a complex nose of black cherry jam, dark chocolate, and roasting coffee. Its rich expression of luscious fruit extends through a lingering, elegant finish.

• Wine Advocate: A top-notch, sexy effort in a challenging vintage, Twomey’s 2000 Merlot (14.9% alcohol) is a voluptuous, chocolate, coffee, berries, toasty oak, and caramel-scented offering with candied black cherry and currant fruit. It is impossible to resist this decadently-styled blend of 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc.

• Stephen Tanzer: Full ruby-red. Smoky, roasted French oak sweetens the currant syrup, black cherry and mocha aromas. Lush and sweet but firm, with sexy, complex flavors of currant, gunflint, mocha, meat, minerals and oak spices. Clearly less green than the '99, as the owners have opened up the canopy to get more sun on the fruit, and discontinued nitrogen treatments to reduce the vigor of the vines. Very right bank in style. Finishes with firm but fine tannins and noteworthy persistence. This should be a merlot to follow as the vines mature.

Twomey Cellars are a Californian wine producer, located in the heart of Napa Valley. It produces a portfolio of Pinot Noir, Merlot, and Sauvignon Blanc from top vineyards and coastal growing regions in California and Oregon. The Duncan Family established Twomey in 1999 with the purchase of Soda Canyon Ranch Vineyard in the Napa Valley. The estate now has two wineries: one in Calistoga dedicated to Merlot production and one in the Russian River Valley for the production of Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc. The portoflio is led by a range of single vineyard Pinot Noir as well as a regional collection of the variety from Anderson Valley, Russian River Valley and the Dundee Hills. Pinot Noir is barrel-aged in French oak for an average of 18 months depending on the vintage. The winery is one of a few in Northern California to practice the labor-intensive winemaking method of soutirage traditionnel whereby wine is racked from one barrel to another by gravity, without the use of a pump. This process is used for Twomey's Merlot to soften tannins and clarify the wine.
