        • Wine Advocate: While we’re waiting for the next release of The Amargh, Peter Barry presented me with a couple of older vintages for consumers to see how they’re developing. The 2002 The Amargh Shiraz was sampled from a bottle under cork and from a bottle under screwcap. Though I'm a proponent for neither closure, the screwcap bottle was fresher, fruitier and demonstrated a slightly superior texture of tighter, finer grained tannins. However my note and score are for the bottle under cork, which is probably the bottle in most cellars. Very deep garnet-black in color, it displays a lovely choco-mint and mincemeat nose with hints of smoky bacon, coffee, tobacco and cumin seed. The rich, full-bodied flesh is well supported by very crisp acid and a medium-high level of very silky tannins. The finish is very long lending lingering notes of mint, coffee and baking spices. It’s drinking beautifully now and should continue to cellar until 2020+.
        • James Suckling: Dark and smoky nose with a touch of balsamic character. The black hole of the Clare Valley on the expansive and fleshy palate. So much black-fruit aroma that it’s hard to believe it’s a decade old, let alone two. The super-fine tannins give it wonderful silkiness at the very long finish. The same wine under cork closure is more supple, with a touch of caramel, rating two points lower.

        Producer Information

Jim Barry Wines is one of South Australia's most well-known wine producers, having crafted a name for its premium wines made from Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Riesling. The company's most famous wine is the single-vineyard Armagh Shiraz which regularly scores highly with critics. The winery was established in 1959 when Jim and his wife Nancy purchased their first property and vineyards on the outskirts of the Clare Valley. Today the estate owns vineyards in the Clare Valley and Coonawarra, and is well regarded among critics and consumers alike. After purchasing their first vineyards in 1959, the Barrys continued to buy plots throughout the Clare Valley, and today have three vineyards in the region: Armagh, Florita and Lodge Hill. The Armagh vineyard has Shiraz planted on original rootstocks in sandy soils with a high content of clay. The Florita vineyard, planted to Riesling, has some of the oldest vines in Watervale while the Lodge Hill vineyard has both Shiraz and Riesling in two separate plots. The Old Cricket Vineyard in Coonawarra is planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, and as may be inferred from its name, is planted on an old cricket ground. The pitch remains in the middle of the vineyard, and many of the Jim Barry wines have names associated with the game.
