        Reviews:

        • Wine Spectator: Sliced plum on the nose, with orange. Full-bodied, with chewy tannins and a cedar, berry and sliced orange undertone. There's a solid core of fruit.
        • Vinous: The 2004 Barolo Cascina Francia boasts staggering depth and explosive intensity from the very first taste. One of the most broading, backward 2004s, the Cascina Francia is one of the only wines in this vintage that I am slightly disappointed to have opened, as it is so intensely backward. Hints of sage, tobacco, menthol, rose pedal and graphite open up in the glass, recalling just how mesmerizing the 2004 was in cask. At once silky, while at other times virile, the 2004 Cascina Francia is constantly changing in the glass. The multiple shades of nuance and complexity are those of Bebbiolo from a great site as expressed by one of the region;s historic gamilies. The price of Monfortino has escalated rapidly over the last few years, but by comparison, the 2004 Cascina Francia is still available in the market and represents a good relative value.

        Producer Information

Giacomo Conterno is a widely acclaimed Barolo producer based just outside Monforte d'Alba in the south of the Barolo DOCG zone in Piedmont, northwestern Italy. It is best known for its Cascina Francia and the Monfortino Riserva Barolo labels, both of which are long-lived and earthy. The Monfortino Riserva Barolo is only made in excellent vintages and is aged for at least seven years in very large Slovenian oak casks known as "botti". Conterno uses this traditional method to make its wines to avoid excessive vanillin sweetness.
The Cascina Francia site makes both a single-vineyard Barolo and a Barbera d'Alba. The Langhe Nebbiolo is the estate's entry-level offering. Assuming a satisfactory vintage, production levels for the Barbera and Cascina Francia Barolo are around 20,000 bottles each a year. In exceptional years, around 7000 bottles of Riserva may be produced.
