2005 | Joseph Voillot | Volnay Les Champans

Based in Volnay, Domaine Joseph Voillot produces wines in a number of appellations such as Meursault, Volnay, Beaune and Pommard. Today the estate is managed by Etienne Chaix, grandson of Joseph who sadly passed away in 2014. All their vineyards are farmed using the lutte raisonnée approach – or ‘reasoned struggle’ – which utilises traditional cultivation methods without the use of artificial chemicals. This cuvée comes from ‘Les Champans’, one of Volnay`s most recognizable premier cru vineyards. Expect a fruity and powerful wine, with a long life ahead.

• Wine Advocate: Now this is more like it. A lovely nose of red cherry, rose petals and raspberry that is so perfumed that I would like more lift. The medium-bodied sappy palate is good extraction, very pure with bitter cherry, blueberries and redcurrants. Very well balanced with a corpulent finish. Quite feminine and seductive. Excellent. Tasted January 2007.

• Burghound: From vines that average 50 years of age. A reserved and inexpressive nose of distinctly ripe red berry fruit and subtle warm earth and underbrush notes where the latter element continues onto the dense, rich and powerful medium full flavors supported by impeccably ripe structure on the energetic and hugely long finish. Like the Brouillards, this is the best Voillot Champans in years as it's blessed with absolutely superb material and knockout length plus the sense of transparency and balance are reference standard. However, this will not be a 'crowd pleaser' young as it will need plenty of time to unfold. *Sweet Spot, Outstanding*

Domaine Joseph Voillot is a wine estate situated in the village of Volnay in Burgundy. Its vineyards span approximately 8 hectares (20 acres) split into 35 parcels in Volnay, Pommard, Meursault and Beaune. The vast majority of these are planted to Pinot Noir and include more than 10 Premier Cru sites situated mainly within the villages of Volnay and Pommard.The Voillot family are well-established Burgundian winemakers and have been cultivating vines at the domaine for six generations. Today the estate is managed by Etienne Chaix.Domaine Joseph Voillot's Premier Cru holdings include Champans and Fremiets in Volnay, Les Rugiens Bas and Epenots in Pommard, Aux Coucherias in Beaune and Les Cras (the sole Chardonnay Premier Cru site) in Meursault. In addition, it produces several expressions of regional- and village-level wines made from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
