A big, structured wine, still young, with a dense, firm character. The wine is solid, with concentrated black fruits that power deep down into the texture, adding their richness to licorice, bitter chocolate and inspired acidity.

• Wine Advocate: Tart but ripe black raspberry and cassis are allied to tobacco and singed meat in the Gros 2006 Clos Vougeot Le Grand Maupertui, which offers a flattering creamy richness yet an invigorating sense of vivacity. The bitter side of its black fruits, its meatiness, and stony notes gain prominence in the wine's long, formidably intense, and positively frisky finish. Such a youthfully charming and enticing Clos Vougeot you won't often encounter, although I am confident it will be worth following for at least a decade.

• Vinous: Very fresh, pure aromas of black cherry, licorice, menthol and minerals. Then tightly coiled but surprisingly sweet on the palate, with captivating flavors of cassis, black cherry, minerals and sexy gingery spices; much more black fruit than red. This very suave, tangy wine spreads out to saturate the palate on the back end, finishing with great class and precision. Lay this one down.

Producer Information

Domaine Anne Gros is a wine producer based in the village of Vosne-Romanée, in the Côte de Nuits subregion of Burgundy's Côte d'Or. The estate produces a range of wines from local and neighboring appellations across both the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grape varieties.The domaine has a total of 6.5 hectares (16 acres) across nine appellations, including parcels in the Grand Cru vineyards of Clos Vougeot, Echezeaux and Richebourg. Anne Gros also makes village-level Vosne-Romanée and Chambolle-Musigny wines, as well as generic Bourgogne rouge and Bourgogne blanc wines.The vines are farmed according to biodynamic principles. Red grapes are vinified in epoxy-lined cement tanks, with whites in stainless steel.Barrel-aging typically lasts around 16 months with 80 percent new oak for Grand Crus, 50 percent for village wines and 30 percent for regional wines. The Bourgogne blanc is aged for 12 months in large-format (500L) oak barrels of which around 30 percent are new oak.
