      Detailed Description

Deep purple black in color. The nose combines an opulent and seductive fruitiness with an intricate kaleidoscope of complex multidimensional aroma. Pungent resiny scents of eucalyptus and rock rose, notes of lychee and passion-fruit combine with exotic hints of leather, musk and cedar. The palate is round and velvety and the dense but well integrated tannins are wrapped in a cloak of succulent berry fruit flavor. The jammy fruit carries through into the finish where it is lifted by an attractive crispness and pungency.

      Reviews:

      • Wine Advocate: The 2009 Croft has a tightly wound bouquet of blackberry, black plum, and touches of glycerine and graphite that are well-defined but persistently broody. The palate is full-bodied with a burly, powerful entry. There is real structure and presence here – a Croft packed full of spicy black fruit with white peppers generously sprinkled over the finish. This is an ambitious Croft that could become a future legend – or might trip over its untrammeled ambition!
      • Wine Spectator: Redolent of blackberry and dark fruits, this also features a fascinating mix of mocha, graphite and tobacco. Very juicy as well, which features into the finish of fine-grained tannins and spice. An exuberant and refined Vintage Port. Best from 2020 through 2050. 5,000 cases made.

      Producer Information

Croft is a leading Port house releasing a full range of styles, though it is particularly known both for vintage Port production, alongside a range of more innovative products, including the first rosé Port. It is the oldest business still active as a Port wine producer; the company has its roots as a wine merchant founded in York, northern England in 1588 by Henry Thompson. By 1647, it had acquired cellars in Bordeaux, and on the journeys out to wine regions was trading several other commodities such as textiles; during the 1650s it had begun trading with Portugal. The Croft family married into the firm in the 1730s, and the first vintage Croft Port was the 1781. In 1911, the Gilbey family took control. In the 1960s and '70s, the firm diversified into brandy and Sherry. By this time it was owned by IDV, which later became Diageo. In 2001, the Croft Port brand was bought by Taylor Fonseca (which became the Fladgate Partnership), while Gonzalez Byass bought the Sherry arm and Diageo retained the brandy business. The vineyard estate has undergone extensive investment in recent years. In addition the house gained prominence for releasing Croft Pink, and new blends such as Croft Indulgence, while gaining high ratings for its vintage releases. Croft's key vineyard is Quinta da Roêda, purchased in 1889, which contains some of the oldest vineyards in the Douro.
