      Detailed Description

The 2009 Maya Proprietary Red Wine displays a deep garnet-purple color, exploding with notes of rose hip tea, dried lavender and candied violets over a core of raspberry preserves, blackberry pie and redcurrant jelly plus suggestions of spice cake, tobacco and forest floor. Full-bodied, concentrated and boldly fruited, the palate is beautifully lifted with racy freshness and supported with a very fine-grained frame, finishing long and incredibly poised.

        Producer Information

Dalla Valle Vineyards is a Napa Valley producer located on a sunny hillside terrace of fractured volcanic rock in Oakville, 400ft(120m) above the Silverado Trail. It is particularly known for its flagship Maya cuvée, which is one of the most prestigious of all Californian wines. The 1992, 2002, 2013 and 2016 wines have all received 100-point scores from The Wine Advocate publication. The estate was founded in 1986 (although it was purchased in 1982) by former scuba diver and diving equipment entrepreneur Gustav Dalla Valle and his wife Naoko. After Gustav's death in 1995, just as the winery was gaining cult status, Naoko, whose family background includes Sake production, took control of the estate. Naoko is widely credited with having maintained, if not augmented, the winery's reputation into the 21st Century. While internationally renowned winemaking consultant Michel Rolland remains part of the team, the winery has a star-studded roster of past winemakers, including Heidi Peterson Barrett, Mia Klein, Steve Mathhiasson and Andy Erickson (previously of Screaming Eagle). Maya Dalla Valle, daughter of Gustav and Naoko and whose name was given to the winery's original top cuvée, formerly took over winemaking duties in 2021. From an initial vineyard size of three acres (1.2 hectares), the estate now covers 20 acres (eight hectares) on the eastern Napa Valley hillsides overlooking Oakville. Fellow cult winery Screaming Eagle is a neighbor (former Screaming Eagle proprietor and real estate agent, Jean Philips, introduced the Dalla Valles to the original property). Although the vineyard has seen changes in plantings (which has seen the likes of Sangiovese and Merlot trialled at the site) it is primarily planted to Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, which provides the basis for the wines and the portions vary depending on vintage. In the case of the Maya label, these are aged for around 22 months in mostly new French oak barrels. Production has always been small. Only 200 cases of the 1988 Maya were produced and fewer than 500 cases of the wine are currently made each year. The winery makes two other wines. Dalla Valle Cabernet Sauvignon features a smaller proportion of Cabernet Franc and a maximum of 60 percent new oak. The newest addition to the line up is Collina Dalla Valle, made from the same varieties but from the estate's younger vines.
