Producer Information
The Duclaux estate was founded in 1928 by Frédéric Caillet who, at over 50 years old, saved enough to add this terroir to the agricultural land he already owned in the region. In this case, it is easy to acquire plots of land that were fallow after the First World War and the devastation of phylloxera. In addition to making wine, the farmer grows fruit and vegetables at the Duclaux estate. In the 1960s, his descendant Rémi Duclaux continued to sell to trading houses. Until the mid-1970s, it was more profitable to sell vegetables than to make wine. The trend reversed at the end of the decade, and in 1978, the estate bottled its wine at 100%. The Duclaux estate then made its living from the wine trade. The beginning of the 1980s marked a golden age for Côte-Rôtie wine. The winegrowers planted and produced happily, and the appellation passed the threshold of 100 hectares of vines in 1979. At the Duclaux estate, production struggled to keep up with the strong demand from an essentially French clientele. In 1993, David Duclaux joined his father at the estate after training at the Bel Air wine high school, in Beaujolais. From 1995 until 2001, he planted 1.5 hectares of vines. He was joined in 2001 by his brother Benjamin. Together, they are at the head of a 5.8 hectare vineyard in 2015. The Duclaux estate, created in 1928, is today one of the sure values of Côte-Rotie, with precise and crafted wines, without any aging artifice. David and Benjamin therefore chart their course with regularity and brilliance. They produced their first condrieu in 2014, named Les Caillets, in homage to their great-grandfather, Frédéric Caillet, founder of the estate. The entire range has been highly recommendable for several vintages now and the wines are aging wonderfully.
