      Detailed Description

Vivid purple. Pungent aromas of cherry, black raspberry and violet, along with spice and floral overtones. Bright and energetic on the palate, displaying cherry-cola and dark berry flavors and energizing spiciness. Dusty, fine-grained tannins add support to the very sweet, persistent, well-focused finish. Shows a very suave blend of richness and vivacity, which Krankl attributes to the Roussanne component in the blend.

        • Wine Advocate: The 2010 Cumulus Vineyard #4 is an off-the-hook effort that showed even better than last year. Made from 44% Syrah, 32% Grenache, 12% Petite Sirah, 8% Mourvedre and 4% Touriga Nacional, it’s mostly destemmed (24% whole cluster) and aged 30 months in 30% new French oak. It boasts incredible aromatics of cassis, blackberry, white chocolate, flowers and spice-box to go with a full-bodied, incredibly pure, seamless and textured feel on the palate. Still a baby, this puppy has a long life ahead of it; give it another year or so and enjoy bottles through 2030. These latest releases from Sine Qua Non and Next of Kyn are at the pinnacle of wine, and it’s simply impossible to taste through these and not be blown away.
        • Vinous: With the 2010 Next of Kyn - No. 4 we shift into more recent vintages, none of which is truly ready to drink. Powerful, tightly wound and unyielding, the 2010 needs at least a few years in bottle before it is ready to show even the faintest glimpse of its true potential. Tasted on the second and third days after opening, the 2010 gradually started to show some of its true character, but readers should not plan on opening a bottle anytime soon. This retrospective tasting provided a great opportunity to revisit the first seven releases of Manfred and Elaine Krankl’s Next of Kyn. As compelling as the Krankls’ Sine Qua Non wines are, I have always found Next of Kyn to be just as fascinating, especially in recent years. This vertical only served to reinforce that impression.

        Producer Information

Sine Qua Non is one of California's most famous wine producers. Based just north of Los Angeles in Ventura County, and with most of its vineyards in Santa Barbara, it eschews the usual image of top California wine as being only from Napa Valley. That is not the only thing eschewed at Sine Qua Non – the same wine is rarely made more than once, turning the idea of the American icon wine on its head. The cult winery specialises in Rhône grape varieties, with most of the red wines based on Syrah and Grenache. White wines are typically based on Marsanne, Roussanne and Viognier and are also modelled after Rhône wines. While most of Sine Qua Non's vineyards are located in Santa Barbara, the home vineyard (and the winery) is located in Oak View. Many of the wines are labeled under the more generic California and Central Coast AVAs, rather than the specific AVAs the vineyards are located in, giving more freedom when it comes to blending.
