      Detailed Description

Dark and very intense colour of deep ruby. Ripe aromas of small black fruit dominate (blackcurrant, blackberry), though with good freshness. The palate is fleshy, with a nice touch of tannin. Long, caressing finish. To be watched during ageing, which will seek to bring out the harmony and the balance.

      Reviews:

      • Wine Enthusiast: From one of the largest estates in the Médoc, this wine is packed with black-currant fruits and elegant tannins. Initially it seems light, but a core of structure and classic poise between fruit and tannin make the wine a candidate for aging.
      • James Suckling: A fine, linear red with currants, blackberries and some chocolate and hazelnuts. Medium to full body. Medium round tannins. Pretty finish.

      Producer Information

Château Larose Trintaudon is a Cru Bourgeois wine producer located in Bordeaux's Haut-Médoc, the château building lying just west of the border between the Pauillac and Saint-Julien appellations. The estate is known for being one of the largest (in terms of size and production) in the wider Médoc, producing more than a million bottles a year. The grand vin is a Bordeaux blend of equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with a little Petit Verdot. The estate has a history dating back to 1719, but it was not until 1838 that Henry Delaroze planted the estate's first vineyards on a gravelly hillside parcel named 'Tenement de Trintaudon.' In the 1920s, most of Château Larose Trintaudon's vines were pulled out as the then-owner tried to establish industrial dairy farming in the Médoc. It was not until the 1960s that the semi-abandoned château was brought back to life by the Forner family, owners of the esteemed Marques de Caceres winery in Rioja, with the help of Emile Peynaud, a well-known oenologist and wine consultant. Château Larose Trintaudon has been owned by the insurance company Allianz since 1986. The vineyard covers 180 hectares (440 acres) across a mix of sand, clay, and limestone soils. The vines average around 30 years old and are farmed by sustainable methods (the estate has the environmental ISO14001 certification). At harvest, grapes are sorted and destemmed, fermented and macerated, post fermentation, in stainless steel vats. Wines go through malolactic fermentation in tank and are pre-blended before barrel aging to create a homogenous quality. Château Larose Trintaudon uses mostly French oak for aging, but also uses a small amount of American oak. The château's second wine is named Les Hauts de Trintaudon, and is also a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot (although Merlot often accounts for around two-thirds of the final makeup). Ever in the Cru Bourgeois rankings, Larose Trintaudon was rated a Cru Bourgeois Supérieur in the latest installment of the classification in 2020. The château is widely distributed and is regularly encountered on shelves and wine lists worldwide. The estate forms part of the wider Vignobles de Larose group, which includes the fellow Haut-Médoc estates of Château Arnauld and Domaine de Perganson (which produces Château Larose Perganson) as well as the Saint-Estèphe-based Château Tour de Pez.
