        Producer Information

Azienda Vinicola Cantele is an Italian wine producer situated between the villages of Fra Guagnano and Salice Salentino in the region of Puglia. The estate has a wide-ranging portfolio of wines that focuses on both indigenous varieties Primitivo, Negroamaro and Fiano, as well as international staples such as Chardonnay, Merlot and Syrah. The estate traces its origins back to 1979 when Giovanni Battista Cantele and his two sons, Augusto and Domenico, established a family wine bottling business in Lecce, Puglia. The family initially used Augusto's position as a consulting oenologist at nearby wineries to source its wines, but this changed in the 1990s when they purchased several vineyards and began to produce their own wines. Today, the Cantele estate has 50 hectares (124 acres) under vine and manages an additional 150ha (371 acres) of vineyards that are owned by local winegrowers. From these vineyards, Azienda Vinicola Cantele makes approximately 1.5 million bottles of wine per year. The majority of the estate's wine portfolio is devoted to its varietal red wines, but it also makes a selection of red wine blends from native Pugliese grape varieties. This is supported by a selection of white, rosé, sparkling and passito wines. Azienda Vinicola Cantele is contributing to viticultural research in partnership with several Italian research institutions including Italy's Institute of Sciences of Food Production and National Research Council (ISPA-CNR). The estate is also reducing the use of manmade herbicides and pesticides in its vineyards in order to improve environmental sustainability.
