The only non-wheated offering from the line of Old Rip Van Winkle products this 13 year old rye is, like all Van Winkle products, damn hard to find. Released in extremely limited quantities every October/November (with an even smaller allocation coming out in spring), you will need to know several people and be on all kinds of lists at your favorite liquor stores to get a bottle for the home.

Nose: A nose of honey, clove, rye, oak and the initial blast of heat.

Palate: The palate is filled with spicy cinnamon and Szechuan peppercorns before fruity notes of cherry and pear appear. Maple sugar candy rounds off the taste.

Finish: Finish is long and complex with cherries and pepper notes continuing through."

Buffalo Trace Distillery is a distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky, that is owned by the Sazerac Company. It has historically been known by several names, including the George T. Stagg Distillery and the Old Fire Copper (O.F.C.) Distillery. Its namesake bourbon brand, Buffalo Trace Kentucky Straight Bourbon whiskey, was introduced in August 1999. The company claims the distillery is the oldest continuously-operating distillery in the United States. The company says the name "Buffalo Trace" refers to an ancient buffalo crossing on the banks of the Kentucky River in Franklin County, Kentucky. The Sazerac Company purchased the distillery in 1992.
