Zwack Herb Hungary Liqueur Tasting Notes

Nose: Dense herbal aroma with hints of orange peel, dried roots, dark caramel and oak.

Palate: Bold and layered – bitter herbal flavour front‑and‑centre, followed by caramelised sugar, toasted oak and subtle citrus peel notes.

Finish: Long, warming and slightly medicinal; lingering herb‑root bitterness balanced by soft sweetness and oak spice.

Distillery Information

Zwack Unicum Plc traces its roots back to 1790 when Dr. József Zwack developed the original herbal liqueur recipe for the Habsburg Imperial Court. The company, based in Budapest, has maintained the secret formula of over forty herbs and spices, combining maceration and distillation, followed by maturation in oak barrels. Zwack is widely regarded as one of Hungary’s iconic spirits and holds the status of a “Hungarikum” (national speciality). Over the centuries the business weathered nationalisation, war and regime change, but the recipe and family involvement remain central. Today Zwack produces multiple liqueurs, but the original herbal liqueur remains its flagship – served chilled, often as a shot or digestif, and celebrated for its bold herbal character.
