Reviews:
- Wine Advocate: The 2007 Vieux Château Certan has a nonchalant, earthy, well-defined bouquet that you might be tempted to locate on the Left Bank rather than the Right. Hints of wild mint, clove and bay leaf become more pronounced as it unfolds, though this is a Pomerol that is not inclined to click into fifth gear. The palate is medium-bodied, the Cabernet component quite noticeable with slightly leafy black fruit, sage and leather towards a finish whose patina of dryness suggests this VCC should be drunk over the next 5-6 years, as I cannot envisage it improving further. This is a 'useful' and well-crafted wine from the very able hands of Alexandre Thienpont. Tasted February 2016.
- Wine Spectator: Shows blackberry, fresh mushroom and Indian spices on the nose. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a long, glorious finish for the vintage. Well-crafted as usual. Best after 2013.
Producer Information
Vieux Chateau Certan is the oldest growth in the parish of Pomerol. Its origins date back to the beginning of the 16th century when the Demay family, originally from Scotland, came to liveo n the property. The local vicinity takes its name from this old chateau. In 1858, the property was purchased by Charles Bousquet who built the buildings that stand to this day. In 1924, Georges Thienpont, a wine shipper from Etikhove in Belgium, bought the chateau that, since 1957, has been run by a company formed by the Thienpont heirs.
