Red Wine: 2008 | Château La Fleur-Pétrus | Pomerol (Magnum)

Fresh and racy, with the slightly angular feel of the vintage, though this has filled out nicely, allowing bitter plum, cherry paste and singed alder notes to meld nicely. Still young, though not in the league of the top vintages. Nonetheless, there's some lovely perfume, fruit and overall elegance here.

      Reviews:

      • Wine Advocate: A major sleeper of the vintage, the 2008 La Fleur Petrus (90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc) is a remarkably sexy, opulent wine that transcends the vintage character. Its dense plum/ruby/purple color is accompanied by notes of sweet black cherries, licorice, truffles and a hint of graphite. Full-bodied with silky tannin as well as undeniable appeal, richness, purity and a 40+ second finish, this is a sure-fire big buy in 2008.
      • James Suckling: On the high-toned side, but ripe and persistent, with red currant and red cherry fruit pushed by licorice and sweet spice. There's a racy edge on the floral-tinged finish, where the fruit fleshes out a bit more, boding well for cellaring.

      Producer Information

Château La Fleur-Pétrus is a wine estate in the Pomerol appellation of Bordeaux, and is widely regarded as one of the greatest in the region. The wine is Merlot-dominant, and is known for its finesse, elegance and ageworthiness. The estate vineyard extends to just under 19 hectares (46 acres) and is planted chiefly to Merlot (91 percent) with six percent Cabernet Franc and three percent Petit Verdot. The core vineyard is situated across the road from Château Pétrus and adjacent to Château Lafleur in the eastern quadrant of the Pomerol appellation. This site has more gravel than either of its neighbors, which likely has a role in the more refined style of the wine. La Fleur-Pétrus is typically vinified in cement and stainless steel, and then aged in a mixture of new and old French oak for 18 months. Annual production is around 45,000 bottles. The property was bought by Jean-Pierre Moueix in 1953, but was largely replanted after the frosts of 1956. The property was enlarged in 1994 after vines (and a country house built in 1782) were purchased from Château Le Gay and again in 2012 with the purchase of a plot near Le Pin.
