      Detailed Description

The Charmes-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes 2010 is intense and expressive, with notes of ripe red and black fruits, liquorice, violets and coffee beans. On the palate, the tannins are seamless and the finish long, with a distinct saline minerality at the core of its supple, spiced fruit.

      Reviews:

      • Wine Cellar: Full, saturated medium ruby. Superb nuance and lift to the aromas of kirsch, violet, licorice pastille and crushed stone. Wonderfully sappy and alive in the mouth, with outstanding energy and tension to its dark fruit, floral and minerals flavors. Conveys a powerful impression of dry extract, not to mention an exhilarating balance of sweetness and acidity. Noble tannins coat every square millimeter of the palate on the building, vibrant aftertaste. A great vintage for this consistently outstanding bottling: this may yet merit an even higher score 12 or 15 years down the road.
      • Burghound: There is just enough wood to be visible but it should be absorbed in short order. Interestingly, the aromatic profile is relatively similar to that of the Griotte, though this has significantly more depth and concentration to the full-bodied, powerful and explosive flavors that benefit greatly from the exceptional depth of material before culminating in a massively long and impeccably well-balanced finish. Sometimes the Roty Charmes displays its wood for years but the 2010 version appears as though it will eat it sooner than usual. In short, this is a stunner of a wine that clearly outclasses its two grands crus stable mates so if you can find it buy it.

      Producer Information

Domaine Joseph Roty and Domaine Philippe Roty are leading Burgundy domaines, with some of the largest cult followings in the country. The Rotys have been producing wine in Gevrey-Chambertin since 1710, and the range of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines from their 12 hectares (30 acres) of vines are considered some of the best made on the Côte d'Or. Domaine Joseph Roty is the core estate. Joseph himself, who died in 2008, was a legendary figure in the region, not only for the quality of the wines, but for his reluctance to speak to journalists and share details of their winemaking methods. His son Philippe, who had some parcels in Marsannay, set up an additional domaine with an address across the road from Joseph Roty. A smaller number of wines is made under the Philippe Roty label. Sadly, Philippe passed away in 2015 aged just 46, and the combined operation is now by run his mother and brother Pierre-Jean, who has long been in charge of the vineyards. It has been reported that at least some of Philippe's personal vines are being incorporated into the Joseph Roty label. The estate boasts an average vine age of more than 60 years with a majority of the Très Vieilles Vignes sourced from vines planted in 1881. These are some of the oldest vines in the Côte d'Or, planted on grafted roots in attempt to combat the phylloxera louse. In the winery, cold-soaking prior to a cool fermentation allows for the soft extraction of phenolics and tannins. A combination of new and two-year old oak barrels are used for maturation depending on the vintage with the Grand Cru aged in 100-percent new oak barrels.
