Opaque ruby-purple in color, the 2012 FUTO Oakville radiates complex aromas of lilac, brambly fruit, clove and charcoal. Texturally, this is perhaps the most approachable young FUTO since the 2007. The tannins are perfectly interwoven into the dense core of blackberry and blueberry liqueur along with notes of mocha, truffle and cedar. A full-bodied wine that never gets heavy and finishes with energy and purity.

• Wine Advocate: This is a drop-dead beautiful wine with an absolutely extraordinary nose of white flowers, blueberries, blackcurrants, licorice and camphor. Stunning forest floor notes also make an appearance in this ripe, full-bodied, opulent wine that is begging to be given a three-digit score. The silkiness of the tannins and the stunning purity of fruit of this unfined and unfiltered wine is simply breathtaking.

Producer Information

Futo Wines (sometimes refered to as Futo Estate) is a Napa Valley wine producer with vineyards in the highly-regarded AVAs of Oakville and the Stags Leap District. Cabernet Sauvignon is the most widely planted grape variety across these vineyards and forms the central component of Futo Wines' Bordeaux-style red wines. The estate was founded in 2002 with Tom and Kyle Futo's purchase of a 16-hectare (40-acre) Oakville property – the renowned Harlan Estate is an immediate neighbor in the undulating foothills on the western edge of the valley. Approximately three hectares (seven acres) of Futo's original land had previously been planted to vine back in the 1980s. In 2004, Futo Wines expanded its vineyard holdings with the acquisition of an adjoining two-hectare (six-acre) plot. The Oakville winery was completed in 2008, and four years later, Futo Wines increased its vineyard hectarage with an additional 16-hectare (40-acre) property in the Stags Leap District. Futo's Oakville vineyards are planted on sandstone and shale slopes elevated above the valley floor. These plots have been divided into 25 blocks that are mainly planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, with additional sections of Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Merlot. These grape varieties are blended to produce the flagship Futo Oakville estate red wine. The Futo 5500 label is a Cabernet Sauvignon-based wine made from Futo Wines' 5500 Estate in the Stags Leap District. This site – a former rock quarry – is typified by steep terraces planted to Cabernet Sauvignon vines. The estate's third wine – the Futo OVSL – is red blend sourced from both the Oakville (OV) and Stags Leap District (SL) vineyards.
