        Producer Information

Azienda Agricola Giacomo Fenocchio is a wine producer in Monforte d'Alba, Barolo, in the Piedmont region of Italy. It is internationally acclaimed for its Barolos made in the traditional style from Nebbiolo. Fenocchio owns four Cru plots in three different areas of the Barolo DOCG: Bussia in Monforte d'Alba, Villero in Castiglione Falletto and Castellero and Cannubi in the Barolo commune itself. Single vineyard wines are made from each, alongside a "normale" and a Bussia Riserva; this is called "90 Di" from the tradition of submerging the cap for 90 days during vinification. The total vineyard area is 14 hectares (35 acres). The vines are - and have traditionally been - farmed organically, though they are not certified. Wines are made with minimal intervention. Barolo wines are vinified and aged in stainless steel for six months, then moved to large Slovenian casks for 30 months (4 years for the Riserva), before being finished in the bottle for one year. Giacomo Fenocchio has six other wines in its portfolio. The reds are a Langhe Nebbiolo, Langhe Freisa, Barbera d'Alba and Dolcetto d'Alba. The white wines are a Roero Arneis and Anima Arancio, an orange wine also made from Arneis but left on its skins for 30 days. Both are made in stainless steel and bottled promptly. The vineyards have been passed down from father to son for five generations since 1894. Most of the output was sold locally until Giacomo Fenocchio took over in 1964, and sought to raise quality. He bought prime parcels in Cannubi and Castellero while retaining a focus on the Bussia cru. Today the estate is owned and run by Claudio Fenocchio, alongside his brothers and the house's winemaker. Claudio took over from his father Giacomo upon his death in 1989, resisting the trend at that time to move towards smaller barrels and new oak.
