        Reviews:

        • Wine Advocate: The 2016 Vougeot 1er Cru Les Cras opens in the glass with notes of smoky cassis, raspberries, espresso roast and spices, framed by toasty oak. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, broad and supple, with a vivid core of fruit, racy acids and fine but youthfully chewy tannins, concluding with a penetrating and oak-inflected finish. This is a success in its somewhat old-fashioned style and will reward bottle age.
        • Jeb Dunnuck: Revealing a vivid purple/burgundy color, the 2016 Vougeout 1er Cru Les Cras is one of the more powerful, backward wines from Mongeard-Mugneret. Completely destemmed and brought up in 30-40% new French oak, it offers a beautiful perfume of black raspberries, crushed violets, exotic spices, and white pepper. Deep, medium-bodied, incredibly refined and silky, it has high yet integrated acidity, beautiful tension and purity, and a great finish. It’s a brilliant wine that needs 4-5 years of bottle age and will keep for two decades. Bravo.

        Producer Information

Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret is a Burgundy estate with a long history of making fine Pinot Noir wines in Vosne-RomanĂ©e. The Mongeard family dates its origins in the commune back to 1620. In the 1920s, the marriage of EugĂšne Mongeard to EdmĂ©e Mugneret brought together vineyards from both families, increasing the size of the domaine. In 1945, their son Jean began estate-bottling the wine for the first time and releasing it commercially under the name Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret. Jean had taken over the estate and at 16 was selling its grapes to esteemed producers such as Marquis d'Angerville and Henri Gouges. It was on Gouges' advice that Jean transitioned to bottling the wine himself. The estate is now one of the larger properties and has 30 hectares (75 acres) of vines in over 30 different vineyards, with an average vine age of more than 40 years. The most sought-after wines in Mongeard-Mugneret's catalog are six grand cru-designated wines made from parcels in four esteemed vineyards: Échezeaux, Grands Échezeaux, Clos de Vougeot and Richebourg. Pinot Noir is the most significant variety in the portfolio, supplemented with a small number of white wines made from Chardonnay and AligotĂ©. The white wines tend not to come from the more prestigious grand and premier cru-designated vineyards that the domaine is famous for.
