      Reviews:

      • Wine Advocate: The Allegrini 2017 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico shows dark fruit and spice that all point to the hot and dry conditions of this vintage. The wine is balanced with a good amount of dark fruit intensity but no overtly jammy or baked fruit. That dense fruit wraps thickly over the palate, supported by backend aromas of charred spice and campfire embers.
      • James Suckling: Very rich black fruit on the nose with a ground-base of blackcurrants, tainted with notes of prunes and dates. Smoky-spice notes add complexity. Full-bodied with intense, exotic black-fruit flavors, just as on the nose. Firm tannins and good acidity complete the picture.

      Producer Information

Allegrini is an Italian family business based in the Valpolicella Classico zone of the Veneto. It is widely regarded as one of the leading producers not only in the region but in Italy as a whole, and is particularly known for its Amarone della Valpolicella Classico. The family has been in the region since the 16th Century, and has been involved in winegrowing for much of that time. However, the business as it is known today was founded in the mid-20th Century by Giovanni Allegrini, who began to build the estate's reputation for fine wines in the 1960s and 70s. Today, all of Allegrini's wines are made from estate-grown fruit from 90 hectares (222 acres) of vineyard in the communes of Sant'Ambrogio and Fumane, where the southeast-facing slopes and chalk soils are well-suited to winegrowing. Allegrini's reputation is largely due to the high quality of its Amarone wines, but it also makes wines outside the classic DOC appellations of the region. These wines include several premium single-vineyard cuvées like La Grola, a varietal Corvina, La Poja, which adds Syrah to the typical Valpolicella blend and Palazzo della Torre, which adds Sangiovese. All three are Veronese IGT, as they deviate from the grape combinations prescribed for Valpolicella. The range is completed by a Recioto della Valpolicella Classico, Valpolicella Classico and Soave. The Valpolicella is made from vines in the Classico zone, but some vintages from 2007 were sealed with a Stelvin cap and so lost Classico status.
