        Producer Information

Chateau Ksara, in the heart of the Bekaa Valley, is Lebanon's oldest winery. Alongside the estate's own 21 hectares (51 acres) of vines, Chateau Ksara sources from from a number of vineyards scattered throughout the center and western parts of the Bekaa. It produces a range of wines made from grape varieties such as Cinsaut, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. Ksara's origin dates back to 1857, when a group of Jesuit monks decided to produce wine for religious use, laying the foundations for Lebanon's modern wine industry. The company managed to survive through both world wars, and was producing 1.5 million bottles a year by the 1970s. Production continued during the Lebanese Civil War, although distribution became an issue, and Ksara began to look for markets outside of Lebanon. Today, the vineyards Ksara sources fruit from sit at an average altitude of 1000m (3280 feet) above sea level. The soils are predominantly chalky with layers of limestone, clay and small stones, which retain heat and help ripening. The vineyards range in size from the larger, 76-hectare (187-acre) Tal El Deir and 71-hectare (175-acre) Tal Dnoub sites to the 21-hectare (52-acre) Saghbine site on red soils in southwestern Bekaa. Hot summer days and cool nights allow for a wide range of grape varieties to be planted, from aromatic grapes like Sauvignon Blanc and Gewürztraminer to grapes which prefer warmer temperatures like Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The prestige cuvée of the portfolio is Le Souverain, a blended red wine created for the winery's 150th anniversary. Le Souverain contains 50 percent Cabernet Sauvignon and 50 percent of the lesser known Arinarnoa, a grape that has its roots in the south of France and brings depth of color and tannic structure to blends. As well as white, red and rosé wines, Ksara also make an arak, and a range of sweet, fortified wines. All of the red wines produced at Chateau Ksara are aged in deep limestone cellars that were dug out by the Jesuits during World War I.
