2018 | Henri Gouges | Nuits St Georges Les Vaucrains (Magnum)

The 2018 Vaucrains chez Gouges is an excellent wine in the making- powerful and loaded with pure fruit and firm tannins, but not as massive as the version crafted at Domaine Chevillon this year. The wine delivers a superb aromatic constellation of dark berries, black cherries, venison, espresso, a great base of minerality, woodsmoke and a lovely topnote of cola. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and rock solid at the core, with ripe, firm, but surprisingly suave tannins, excellent nascent complexity and a very, very long, youthful and promising finish.

• Vinous: The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Vaucrains 1er Cru comes from a mixture of 20- and 80-year-old vines and was cropped low, around 25hl/ha. It has a floral bouquet with pressed rose petals and potpourri almost dominating the red fruit. The medium-bodied palate offers fine tension; you would think there was some stem addition here, but there is none. I like the mineralité and vigor on the finish, which is precise and long in the mouth. Excellent.

• Decanter: This nearly 1ha premier cru vineyard is among my favourites from Gouges, year after year. In 2018 the wines have wonderful purity and freshness, despite the heat, and the aromatics are alluring: crushed violets, nutmeg and dark cherries. Beautiful and focused with firm, ripe, supple tannins. Aged for 18 months in 20% new barriques. Long finish.

Domaine Henri Gouges is a highly regarded producer in the Burgundy commune of Nuits-Saint-Georges with holdings in a number of its premier cru vineyards. It makes mostly red wine from Pinot Noir, the dominant variety of the region. Though holding no land in grand cru sites, the premier crus of the domaine and the wider Nuits-Saint-Georges appellation are considered to be some of the finest in the Côte de Nuits, the most renowned being Les Saint-Georges.The domaine was founded in 1919 by Henri Gouges and continues to be owned and operated by the family, which dates its history back several generations earlier than the eponymous estate. Gouges was a prominent figure, who made several notable contributions to the region.He was among the first producers to eschew the Burgundy négociant system that was often viewed as corrupt. Instead, in the 1920s, Gouges championed estate bottling, an uncommon practice at the time.
