      Detailed Description

Dark inky purple core and hue. Wild raspberry, plum, violet, mild oak and spice. Medium weight with dense young fruit - digest with polished tannin and a fresh acidity leading to a long finish.

        Producer Information

Château Canon applies to identically named properties in the Canon-Fronsac appellation on Bordeaux's Right Bank, a few kilometers west of Libourne. This is a rather extreme example of the sort of challenges that sometimes face consumers – and Wine-Searcher – when trying to correctly identify and locate a particular wine. Both produce red wine made the Merlot grape variety. One property is owned by the negociant house de Coninck, and has around 10 hectares (25 acres) of vineyards on the two opposing slopes of the Canon ampitheater, on either side of Château Vray Canon Boyer, in the commune of Saint-Michel de Fronsac. Some vintages may feature small amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. A second wine has been produced in the past under the name Canon-Lange. The other Château Canon was bought by a local pharmacist, Jean Galand, from Ets. Jean-Pierre Moueix in 2000, and is highly regarded within the appellation. The wines are typically aged in barrels for 20 months, mostly using French oak but some for some vintages a few barrels were made from wood from other European forests and, even more unusually, Amercian oak. Though, as has happened elesewhere in Bordeaux, for example when larger estates have been divided, one might expect the wines to be known as Canon-de Coninck and Canon-Galand, they are both sold without a suffix. Since retailers rarely reference the family names, there is no way to separate the two wines on Wine-Searcher. Furthermore, these two wines should not be confused with the more famous, prestigious and highly-priced Saint-Émilion Premier Grand Cru Classé also called Château Canon. On the Right Bank there are many other properties whose names feature the word "Canon", and second wines provide further potential for confusion.
