        Producer Information

Cain Vineyard & Winery is a boutique winery located high up in the Spring Mountain subregion in Napa Valley. It is particularly known for its flagship Bordeaux Blend wine, Cain Five, made from grapes sourced from the estate. Cain got its start in 1980 when Jerry and Joyce Cain purchased 550 acres (220 hectares) of the McCormick Ranch on Spring Mountain. The former sheep farm was planted to five typical Bordeaux grape varieties – Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec – with the intention of making a brawny mountain Napa Cabernet blend. The vineyard spans altitudes of 1400-2100ft (425-640m) above sea level, and is nestled in a bowl shape at the top of the Spring Mountain AVA, just beside the Sonoma border. The first vintage of Cain Five was released in 1985. It gets its name from the five included Bordeaux varieties, and is dense and rich with a typical Spring Mountain floral note. The estate makes two other Bordeaux Blend wines: the Cain Concept, which is made from famous benchland vineyards in the Rutherford and Atlas Peak AVAs, and the Cain Cuvée, a Merlot-dominant blend of two vintages. The wines are produced by critically lauded and sometimes outspoken winemaker Chris Howell. The winery, heritage barn and housing on the property, as well as the 2019 and 2020 wines in the cellar, were entirely destroyed in 2020 by the Glass Fire – one of a series of wildfires to have ripped through parts of Napa Valley and the surrounding area that year.
