Producer Information
Don Tiburcio Benegas, great-grandfather of Federico Benegas Lynch, arrived in Mendoza at the end of the 1800s, from Rosario, where the family had a ranch. Mendoza at that time was economically supported mainly by Summer Alfalfa and Wheat that was produced in the irrigated oases. With the arrival of the train and the development of the fields near Buenos Aires, both economic sources enter into crisis. Don Tiburcio Benegas, married to the daughter of Eusebio Blanco, has the vision of a Mendoza sustained in the wine industry. Eusebio Blanco, who brought Pouget to Mendoza, instilled in him the seed of love for viticulture. Don Tiburcio then traveled to Chile to look for cuttings and to France to bring some of the best Chateaus of that time, varieties unknown until then, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Petit Verdot and Chardonnay. Later the French would come to Mendoza to look for these same varieties not affected by Phylloxera, a plague that devastated and destroyed European vineyards. Don Tiburcio Benegas distributes stakes with the conception of creating a wine industry, knowing that a single winery could not develop it. From 1883 to 1886 the number of hectares of vineyards grew from 2,000 hectares to 6,000 hectares, reaching 40,000 hectares in 1920. He also develops innovative concepts in pursuit of quality viticulture, such as planting white and red varieties separately, and the use of gravity production. In 1883 he founded the “El Trapiche” winery, a producer of wines that competed with the European ones. In this way, Don Tiburcio became one of the most important personalities of American winegrowing in the 19th century along with Agoston Haraszthy in California and Silvestre Ochagavía Errazuriz in Chile. At the beginning of the '70s, with the Argentine wine industry immersed in a crisis, the shareholders who controlled the family company Benegas Hnos. decided to dissolve El Trapiche, and all assets were sold separately.
