Red Wine: 2016 | Bernard Dugat-Py | Charmes Chambertin
A brooding nose consists of essence of plum and black cherry scents that are cut with notes of earth, the sauvage and floral wisps. The rich, full-bodied and concentrated big-bodied flavors possess good power and muscle on the mouth coating and quite serious finale where an interesting hint of coffee appears.

Reviews:
- Wine Advocate: The 2016 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is superb, bursting from the glass with expressive aromas of morello cherry and raspberries that mingle with touches of licorice and rich soil. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and expansive, with a deep core of fruit that cloaks its rich structuring tannins and a long, succulent finish. While the wine displays all the exuberant breadth that's so typical of this cuvée, the cooler vintage lends it a sense of coiled energy that warmer years miss, and I suspect this will develop especially well in bottle.
- Decanter: Dugat-Pys’ one hectare of vines in Charmes-Chambertin produced a mere six barrels this year. Vinified with 50% whole cluster fruit, this is an assembly of five parcels of Charmes, plus one of Mazoyères which is considered to be closer in geology to the former than stonier Mazoyères. The resulting wine is very fine, bursting from the glass with a huge bouquet of briary black fruit, red cherry, burning embers, rose petal and grilled meat. On the palate the wine is deep and multidimensional, its expansive attack cutting a broad swathe across the palate. It has a core of sweet, vibrant and rich fruit, and an impressive structural chassis which is almost entirely concealed - its suppleness should make this the most immediate of the Dugat-Py grand crus.
Producer Information
Domaine Dugat-Py is a wine producer in the village of Gevrey-Chambertin, Burgundy. It is best known for its red wines made from Pinot Noir in grand cru vineyards such as Charmes-Chambertin and Chambertin. It also makes a range of premier cru wines, and a grand cru Chardonnay from the Corton-Charlemagne vineyard. The domaine was created through the marriage of Bernard Dugat and Jocelyne Py in 1979, bringing together two sets of vineyards. Dugat-Py owns plots in several of the Gevrey-Chambertin grand cru vineyards, and also makes village-level and premier cru wines from plots in Vosne-Romanée, Pommard and Chassagne-Montrachet. The domaine's vines are on average 65 years old, with some vines in the grand cru plots reaching an age of 90. Domaine Dugat-Py's wines are aged for up to 24 months in oak, in cellars which date back to the 11th Century. Compared to a majority of producers in the Gevrey-Chambertin, picking of grapes commences relatively early in the season. Minimal intervention is applied in the winery with no temperature control post fermentation. Given the size and prestige of the domaine, production is small – about 300 bottles are released annually.
