Reviews:
- Wine Advocate: The 2018 Chardonnay Ryo-fu offers toast, golden apples, salted almonds, white flowers and stone aromas on the nose. The palate has a great balance of nutty, toasty fruits and bright, juicy freshness, finishing long and nuanced.
- Jeb Dunnuck: Lots of honeyed melon and buttered orchard fruits emerge from the 2018 Chardonnay Ryo-Fu, which is a multi-vineyard blend that spent 10 months in 10% new oak. Rich and medium to full-bodied, it has a rounded, elegant texture and loads of character.
Producer Information
Freeman Vineyard and Winery was founded in 2001 by Ken and Akiko Freeman in California’s Green Valley region. They produce a range of cool climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines from grapes sourced from both estate vineyards and partner growers. Total production is less than 5000 cases. The Freemans are also co founders, in 2011, of the West Sonoma Coast Vintners Association. This has successfully lobbied for the establishment of a new AVA, authorized in late 2019. The new zone extends along much of the coast of Sonoma (but does not include the Green Valley). When the business was founded neither of the Freemans had any practical experience in the vineyard or cellar. After years working with consulting winemaker Ed Kurtzman, Akiko now directs every aspect of Freeman's winemaking and viticulture. Akiko, originally from Tokyo, is a rare and possibly unique thing; an Asian female winemaker in the United States.
