Producer: Cantina Terlano

Vintage: 2020

Size: 750ml

ABV: 13%

Varietal: Pinot Blanc

    Country/Region: Italy, Trentino-Alto Adige

      Detailed Description

This comes from the mountainous northern part of Italy where the country starts to become more like Austria. The clue is in the name, Südtirol, German is spoken more here than Italian. The wines have something of an Austrian feel too. This is made from pinot bianco or grauburgunder as it's known in German. A good way to think of this not particularly famous grape is it makes wines that taste a bit like chardonnay.

      Producer Information

Cantina Terlano is a leading wine producer in the German-speaking Italian region of Alto Adige – Sudtirol. The winery regarded as one of the very best cooperatives in Italy. It was founded in 1893 and now has 143 member growers farming a total of 190 hectares (470 acres). The village of Terlano is located halfway between the regions two main towns, Merano and Bolzano, in a wide section of the Adige river valley. Production is split 70-30 between white and red wine. The extensive portfolio includes wines from all of the major grape varieties grown in the region. The winery produces broadly four tiers of wines. The top cuvée is the Primo, or Terlaner I – a barrel-aged white wine made predominantly from Pinot Bianco, with Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc playing a supporting role. The Rarity range consists of wines that have undergone extended aging (up to a decade) in the cellars of the winery before bottling. The core offering, however, is based around the so-called Selection or Tradition ranges. The former includes the cuvées Quarz (Sauvignon Blanc), Nova Domus (Pinot Bianco, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc) Lunare (Gewürztraminer) and Porphyr (Lagrein). The Tradition – or Classic – range consists of varietally-labeled wines.
