Detailed Description
The bouquet is deep, reserved and already very complex, wafting from the glass in a mix of red plums, red and black cherries, grilled meats, dark soil tones, mustard seed, coffee bean, raw cocoa and spicy oak. On the palate the wine is pure, deep, full and sappy at the core, with stunning mineral drive, great focus and grip, ripe, firm and seamless tannins and stunning length on the perfectly balanced and tangy finish.
Reviews:
- Burghound: Note: from two parcels of vines approximately 40 years old and a third that was originally planted in 1919 A more restrained and slightly more elegant nose grudgingly offers up its softly spicy and markedly floral infused aromas of various red berries. The delicious, intense and larger-bodied flavors exude evident minerality on the impressively persistent, youthfully austere and equally chiseled finish that displays focused power. This is very much built to repay extended cellaring so again, at least a modicum of restraint is called for.
- Vinous: The 2020 Chambertin Grand Cru has a very pure and intense bouquet with brambly red fruit, crushed stone, blood orange and light rose petal scents. The palate is very harmonious, silky smooth with perfectly judged acidity. This caresses the senses rather than overpowers them, gentle yet insistent and fanning out on the finish that feels very persistent. Superb...but will the Chapelle-Chambertin challenge its supremacy?
Producer Information
Domaine Rossignol-Trapet is wine producer based in Gevrey-Chambertin, 13km (eight miles) south of Dijon, in Burgundy's Côte de Nuits subregion. The wider Rossignol-Trapet estate includes vineyards located in both the Côte de Nuits and the more southerly Côte de Beaune, and produces a range of wines covering grand and premier cru sites, predominantly in the Gevrey and Beaune appellations. The domaine was founded in 1961 by the marriage of Jacques Rossignol and Mado Trapet. Both the Rossignol and Trapet families have long and notable histories in the regions of Volnay and Gevrey-Chambertin, respectively. Their sons Nicolas and David Rossignol took over the management of the estate in 1990, and subsequently introduced biodynamic agricultural practices to the Domaine. The estate is a Pinot Noir producer, working with the variety across a range of sites and at vine densities that range from low to high. They are generally located on southeast facing hillsides, typified by mineral-rich soils composed of clay and a variety of minerals, but mainly based around limestone. The estate is certified biodynamic by Demeter and organic by Ecocert, and favors the use of of natural herbicides, as well as natural and organic fertilizers, in its vineyards. Domaine Rossignol-Trapet holds vineyards in the Côte de Nuits Grand Cru climats of Le Chambertin, Latricieres-Chambertin and Chapelle-Chambertin, as well as five Côte de Nuits Premier Cru-classified vineyards in Clos Prieur, Petite Chapelle, Cherbaudes, Les Corbeaux and Aux Combottes. The Domaine's sole Beaune Premier Cru-classified vineyard is Les Teurons (one of the largest in Beaune) but also has vines in Savigny-lès-Beaune.
