Tequila: Fuentaseca Reserva 2003 9 Year Extra Anejo

Fuenteseca Extra Añejo 9 Year distilled in November 2003, with 80% from copper double-column still and 20% distilled from alembic copper pot still. After marrying, 85% of the run was laid in American white oak previously used to age California red wine, and the remaining 15% barreled in used dark French Oak. The casks were then aged for 9 years, at 3,800” elevation, in the town of Tequila, Jalisco in a cool-climate subterranean storeroom.

Detailed Description

Enrique Fonseca's massive Tequileña distillery is a veritable laboratory of tequila production and the experimental lots of extra añejo that comprise the Fuenteseca project were never intended for commercial sale. These barrels were laid down in a subterranean cellar, where the cool environment was intended to allow them to age for years beyond what was otherwise considered desirable. This single-harvest tequila is a blend of column- and pot-distilled products which were vatted together before being aged in American oak ex-red wine barrels (85%) and used French oak (15%). This is the youngest batch of Fuenteseca but is still eons older than almost anything else on the market.

Fuentaseca Reserva 2003 9 Year Extra Anejo Tequila Tasting Notes

Nose: Utterly distinguished, the nose starts with sweet treble notes of nutmeg, cardamom and allspice.

Palate: On the palate, baked apple and syrupy agave flavors are bounded by subtle vanillin, raw sugar cane and pipe tobacco. The spirit really melds well with the wood here; this is likely in part due to the focus and restrain of the column-distillate that forms a preponderance of the blend.

Finish: A lingering finish with an inherent minerality.
