For many years the only winery in the Similkameen Valley, St. Laszlo now shares the area with six wineries and counting. “The more, the merrier,” exults winemaker Joe Ritlop Jr. St. Laszlo is based on a vineyard planted in 1976 by his father, Slovenian-born Joe Ritlop. Joe Jr. continues to make wine from some of the initial heritage varieties, including clinton, delaware and interlaken, along with the more contemporary varieties now common in the valley. “It keeps me apart from the rest,” he says. The Ritlops believe in a natural style of winemaking, using little or no sulphur. The Ritlops also make an astonishing array of fruit wines, poured generously in the wine shop.
