• Wine Advocate: Of the wines in this flight, the 2001 Bolgheri Guado al Tasso gave the most immediate pleasure. This wine is seductive, supple and soft thanks to its dark cherry, ripe fruit, exotic spice, cassis, grilled herb, crushed mineral and sweet chewing tobacco. The blend is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon (with smaller parts Merlot and Syrah). It shows integrity, conservation and purity. In fact, this edition of Guado al Tasso tastes a bit younger than it really is. There's nothing to not like here. The quality of fruit is forceful but pristine, and the mouthfeel is nicely layered and long in length. In the greater scheme of things, Antinori's landmark wine is slightly less complex than some of the great wines also presented at this Masterclass--but that gap is minimal. This is an impressive wine and if you have bottles in your cellar, you can count on it to award great pleasure and overall satisfaction.

• Wine & Spirits: From Antinori's coastal project, this wine blends Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with Syrah to reach a satisfying richness. The herbal tobacco scents keep it tuned to Cabernet; that, together with the sleek, earthy finish, makes it feel very British, the kind of wine 007 might drink with a steak.

Tenuta Guado al Tasso is a Tuscan wine estate located on rolling hills near the coast in the Bolgheri amphitheater. It is a part of the Marchesi Antinori group, and is known for its wines made predominantly from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, rather than the region's famous Sangiovese grape. There are 300 hectares (750 acres) planted with vines on the property. The proximity to the coast provides the vineyards with plentiful sea breezes which moderate the warm, sunny climate, while at the same time minimizing cloud cover. This means that the grapes can reach full ripeness while retaining acidity, which is essential to make a complex, balanced wine. There is a diverse range of soil types, and a correspondingly diverse range of grape varieties – along with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Syrah, Guado al Tasso also makes a white wine based on Vermentino. Former owners, the della Gherardesca family, began wine production on the estate as early as the second half of the 17th Century. In the 1930s the property came under the control of the Antinori family through marriage.
