Deep ruby-red. Highly aromatic, floral aromas of black plum, cassis, mulberry, toffee, coffee and licorice. Round, lush and sweet on entry, then pliant and chewy in the middle, with captivating sweetness.

• Wine Advocate: Though the 2001 was exceedingly tannic, the 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon is superb. Its cassis liqueur, blackberry, and spice aromas lead to a juicy, fresh, hugely ripe personality of exceptional purity and length. Blackberries, black currants, and dark cherries vie with spices and oak for the taster’s attention. A complex, highly expressive, vibrant wine with a delightfully long, suave finish.

• Wine Enthusiast: Leonetti continues to hit the high marks it sets for itself in this, its 25th vintage. The Walla Walla Cab includes 10% Merlot and small batches of Cab Franc and Carmenère. The astonishing, classic Leonetti aromas of penetrating, ripe black fruits, cedar, coffee and chocolate are there in spades, but the overall impression is that the oak has been pulled back just a bit, or perhaps the fruit is just that much riper. Violets and lead pencil continue the stream of sensuous highlights, as the wine winds into its pungent, densely saturated finish.

Producer Information

Leonetti Cellar is one of Walla Walla Valley's pioneering wine producers. It was established in 1977 with plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon and Riesling, and now makes a range of wines from Cabernet, Merlot, Sangiovese and Aglianico. The estate draws upon several key vineyards throughout Walla Walla. These cover a wealth of terroir, on different aspects and slopes, and with a wide range of soil types based on the Valley's silty loam soils. This gives Leonetti the ability to carefully select sites for each variety, and grapes are planted in the vineyards in which they are judged to do best. Several blocks in the Seven Hills and Leonetti vineyards have older vines, which are used to make the top wines. Leonetti uses mostly French oak for aging, but the Sangiovese is aged in neutral puncheons to retain its character. Leonetti Cellars has become one of the region's more premium producers, commanding high prices for its range of mostly Bordeaux-inspired wines. The Reserve Bordeaux Blend has further increased the brand's prestige in recent years, receiving a 100-point score from the famously influential US wine critic Robert Parker.
