        • Wine Advocate: Bachelet’s 2008 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes is, if anything, even more vivacious and brightly fruited (like a mingling of blackberry with red currant and ripe tomato) than his two wines of lesser appellation, but here we have a paradoxical and flattering incipient creaminess (I had to de-gas a sample of this by hand to get a proper impression); a richer sense of marrowy meatiness; and prominent bittersweet herbal concentrate accompanies it all the way along, to its persistent, focused, mineral-encrusted, lip-licking finish. I would expect this to perform well for at least 10-12 years, and have happily revisited in my own cellar 1980s renditions of this cuvee at 15 and more years of bottle age.
        • John Gilman: The 2008 Gevrey V.V. was the last to finish up its malolactic in this vintage, with the wine finally finishing up on September 10th of this year. Consequently, the wine was still a bit grumpy (less than two months after the malo had completed) at the time of my visit, but its potential was still very much in evidence. The bouquet is a classic black fruity blend of cassis, black cherries, gentle meaty tones, Gevrey's black minerality and a topnote of espresso. On the palate the wine is fullish, long and very pure, with tangy acids, moderate tannins and lovely length and grip. 2014-2030+.

        Domaine Denis Bachelet is a small Burgundy producer in Gevrey-Chambertin that has created a following around its limited, small-production red wines made from Pinot Noir. The winery was established by Denis Bachelet in 1983, when he took over family plots totalling just under two hectares (five acres). His grandfather had tended the vines until his retirement in 1973, but his father had pursued another career, and the vineyards had suffered from the lack of attention. Bachelet doubled the estate's vineyard holdings, and acquired a small plot in the grand cru Charmes-Chambertin vineyard, and another plot in the premier cru Les Corbeaux vineyard. Both holdings cover just over 0.4 hectares (one acre) each. Denis Bachelet also makes several Gevrey-Chambertin and Côte de Nuits-Villages wines, as well as a Bourgogne Rouge and a Bourgogne Aligoté. Many of Bachelet's vines are quite old, with some in Charmes-Chambertin being more than a century old. Grapes are entirely destemmed and fermentation uses natural yeasts followed by up to eight days of cold maceration. The wines are then aged in oak, with the length of time and percentage of new oak dependent on the wine.
