2013 | Casa Piena | Cabernet Sauvignon

In the glass the wine has a nearly opaque deep purple hue. The real intrigue comes in the form of the nuanced, deeply layered aromatics. Notes both light and dark emanate towards you: citrus peel, lavender, star anise, cedar bark, crushed blackberries, sandalwood and kirsch liqueur. The palate experience is definitively marked by a pronounced structure and bright high tones, which is the calling card for a wine that had plenty of skin contact during fermentation. Dark notes of cassis, baking chocolate, plum compote, tobacco leaf and oolong tea are neatly layered amidst an upright and bright acid backbone.

• Wine Advocate: This wine emerges from the southern Yountville sector of Napa Valley from a vineyard on State Lane. Dense purple with notes of blueberry and blackberry liqueur, spring flowers, graphite and licorice. The wine is impressively deep, medium to full-bodied with substantial tannin and structure, befitting most classic 2013s. Give it another 2-3 years of cellaring and drink it over the following 20+ years.

• Vinous: The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon from Casa Piena is just as impressive as it has always been. Rich, ample and powerful, the 2013 exudes class. Sweet tobacco, herbs, menthol and licorice wrap around a core of intense red fruit. The flavors are bright, vibrant and intense throughout, but my sense is that the 2014 is still improving. This is a terrific showing from Casa Piena and winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown.

Casa Piena means “full house” in Italian, and that idea – that life, and wine, are better when shared with friends and family – is at the heart of this Napa Valley winery. Founded by Carmen Policy, a former NFL executive who led the San Francisco 49ers to four Super Bowl victories, Casa Piena is a tribute to Carmen’s children (three boys and two girls – a veritable “full house”) and to his roots in an Italian neighborhood of Youngstown, Ohio, where wine, family and community were intertwined. To craft their Cabernets, Carmen and his wife Gail turned to Thomas Rivers Brown, who has shaped the global reputation of Napa Valley Cabernets as winemaker for many of the valley’s finest producers since the 1990s. True to his artisan philosophy, the wines he makes for Casa Piena capture the unique terroir of the Yountville estate vineyards from which they spring, balancing the voluptuousness one expects from a Napa Cabernet with the elegance of an old-world Bordeaux.
