Precise and perfumed with lovely aromatics of cherry, violets, and spice layered with hints of savoury bramble and a mineral element of wet riverstone. There is a wonderful finesse, layers of interest, and finely held textural tannins extending through the long palate. A wine with vibrant focus, intensity and drive.

• Wine Spectator: Aromatic, succulent, fresh and distinctive, with fleshy black cherry, blueberry and marionberry flavors at the core—but that's just the beginning, as details of fresh clove cigarette, white truffle, chai, dried lavender and a whiff of sandalwood emerge on a delicate, juicy frame, with the tannins lingering in the background.

Producer Information

Burn Cottage Vineyard is wine producer located in Central Otago wine region of New Zealand's South Island. Established in 2002, it produces wine predominately from the Pinot Noir grape variety. The 24 hectare (59 acre) estate sits in the foothills of the Pisa mountain range was purchased by German winemakers Marquis and Dianne Sauvage in 2002. Pinot Noir covers around 10 hectares (25 acres) of the land, mostly on slopes that face north and northeast. The small plots of Riesling and Grüner Veltliner are planted in a gully on east-facing slopes with the entire estate farmed biodynamically. The Burn Cottage Vineyard wine portfolio is predominantly Pinot Noir, complimented with small quantities of Riesling and Grüner-Veltliner wines in select vintages. The Burn Cottage Pinot Noir is the flagship of the collection, released as a vintage wine as well as a library selection after aging in the cellar post-bottling. In the winery, Burn Cottage relies on natural yeasts for fermentation, and the use of sulfur is limited. A portion of whole bunches are often included to incorporate tannins into the fermenting wine. French oak barrels are sourced for barrel-aging with a portion of new oak selected for each wine. The Sauvage family also own the Koehler Ruprecht estate in the Pfalz region of Germany.
