Detailed Description

Oooowie, would you look at this! Single grain Scotch from Invergordon, matured in a bourbon barrel for 45 years between 1972 and 2018... who managed to get their hands on that then? OK, we'll try and stop being so smug about it, but it was us! This cracker joins our own Master of Malt collection with a total release of 176 bottles.

Invergordon 45 Year Old 1972 (Private Label) | 700ML Tasting Notes

Nose: Silky butterscotch and candied nuts intertwine with creamy layers of vanilla and crushed almonds. Popcorn follows, with tangy dried orange, Rich Tea biscuits, chocolate buttons, and distant dried herbs.

Palate: Ripe orchard fruits welcome the way for crumbly vanilla fudge and more buttery popcorn character. Floral notes of toasted coconut are joined by more candied citrus, herbal tea, and salted papaya.

Finish: Lemon drizzle cake and biscuity barley wrap things up, with rich, leathery oak, tobacco, raisins, cracked pepper, and a touch of minerality.

Distillery Information

Located in the Highland town of Invergordon, established by Invergordon Distillers Ltd. and operating since 1961 is the Invergordon grain distillery. It is one of only six dedicated grain distilleries in Scotland, and is famous for their Coffey stills, from which they produce some of the finest grain whisky in the world. The Navy withdrew from the town in 1956, leaving a peak of unemployment after which Invergordon was ready to welcome some industrial infrastructure. Oddly, it is based in a region associated with malt distilling, though the combination of easily accessible cereal crops and its port set it as an ideal site for a grain distillery. After a series of owners, Invergordon was absorbed into Whyte & Mackay in 1993, and the majority of liquid distilled goes into Whyte & Mackay blends. Invergordon has an absolutely staggering production capacity of 40,000,000 liters per year, though the whisky firm announced plans in December 2016 to modernise the 1970s distillery.
