In the 15th Century, Count Jean de Valois rebuilt the Chateau in Cognac from the existing ruins and made it the principal residence of the Valois family. François de Valois, the future King of France known as “François 1st”, was born in the Chateau in 1494.

Otard, is a French cognac house founded in 1795 by Jean-Baptiste Antoine Otard. It was founded at the Château de Cognac, and is also sold under the name Château Royal de Cognac. Baron Otard Cognac owned by the Otard family until it was bought by, the Bass Plc the British brewers.
