Simonsig | Chenin Blanc - NV

The 2022 Chenin Blanc starts with a pale lemon color and a fresh nose of bright citrus, yellow apple and wax melon. Medium-bodied, fresh and zesty, the palate is food friendly with mouth-watering acidity that makes me crave fresh seafood, cheeses and salads. The wine continues to evolve, ending with a hint of herbal green citrus and lime candy notes.

Producer Information

Simonsig Wine Estate is a wine producer nestled in the Stellenbosch region of South Africa's Western Cape. It produces a range of wines from classic South African varieties including Chenin Blanc, Shiraz and Pinotage, but is most famous for having produced South Africa's first sparkling Méthode Cap Classique in the style of Champagne, in 1971. Frans Malan bought the property that was to become Simonsig in 1964. Malan was a founding member of the Stellenbosch Wine Route, in addition to pioneering sparkling wines in South Africa. Since Frans' passing, his sons Pieter, Francois, and current winemaker Johan carry on the operations of the winery. Simonsig's flagship wine is a Bordeaux blend called Tiara, which was first produced in 1990. Other important wines include a single-vineyard Syrah called Merindol, an oaked Chenin Blanc aptly named Chenin Avec Chêne, the full-bodied Aurum Chardonnay, a Pinotage which was the first red wine to be released by Simonsig in 1970, and a unique blend of Pinotage, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot named for the estate's founder. Simonsig also has a single-site 100-percent Cabernet Sauvignon named The Garland. Simonsig is, however, most famous for its sparkling wines. The Kaapse Vonkel Brut has been a part of the portfolio since 1971, and has been joined in recent years by a Brut Rosé and a prestige Blanc de Blanc. The property has 210 hectares (520 acres) planted to vine. Simonsig's location in Stellenbosch means it benefits from a cool maritime climate, and has a diverse soil structure of sandstone, granite, and shale. This ideal terroir means that a wide array of grape varieties can thrive here, and the vineyards are planted with everything from Shiraz to Pinot Noir. Simonsig have a large portfolio of wines, and are one of the few wine farms in South Africa to have an onsite bottling line.
