      Detailed Description

The wine is going to be superb, as it delivers a youthfully complex and very pure bouquet of black cherries, dark berries, grilled meats, espresso, a very complex base of black minerality, a touch of Mazis’ vegetal signature aromatics and a good base of cedary new oak. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied, complex and rock solid at the core, with superb transparency, ripe, fine-grained tannins and a very long, vibrant and nascently complex finish.

                Producer Information

Domaine Harmand-Geoffroy is a well-regarded wine producer based in the village of Gevrey-Chambertin, in the Côte de Nuits subregion of Burgundy. The domaine holdings cover nine hectares (22 acres) of vineyard, including plots in the Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru site, as well as in four Premier Cru climats: Champeaux, Lavaux Saint-Jacques, La Perrière and La Bossière. The domaine focuses exclusively on Pinot Noir. Martine and Gérard Harmand inherited the family domaine in 1980, and subsequently passed the responsibilities of the estate on to their son Philippe. The domaine's vines are on average 50 years old, although the oldest vines belonging to Harmand-Geoffroy are 85 years old. The vineyards are maintained and farmed using the lutte raisonnée approach, or "reasoned struggle", which involves traditional cultivation methods and minimal chemical use. Vinification is traditional, too, and starts with the complete destemming of the Pinot Noir grapes following harvest. The grapes are cold-soaked for five days prior to fermentation, which lasts between 15 and 21 days. The wines age in Allier oak barrels, with as much as 40 percent new oak used for the village-level and premier cru wines, and 90 percent new oak for the single grand cru. Harmand-Geoffroy's portfolio also has four village-level Gevrey-Chambertin wines, including a Vieilles Vignes that is made from old vines in the En Songe, Combe and Champerrier climats. The domaine also makes a single Bourgogne Rouge.
