Detailed Description
The outstanding, medium to dark ruby-colored 2001 Richebourg reveals a nose of spiced cherries and creamy blackberries. It expands on the palate, displaying toasted oak-infused black cherry syrup. This hugely spicy, medium-bodied wine has wonderful depth, and a friendly, juicy personality.
Reviews:
- Burghound: While it's hard to believe, the nose has become even more elegant with age and has retained its strikingly extravagant panoply of rose petals, oriental spices, pungent tea and leather notes plus ultra refined pinot fruit. The powerful, chiseled, pure flavors are remarkably detailed, precise and fine with mind bending complexity yet for all the emotional drama of this wine, it remains understated and almost aloof at the moment. The finish is dense, structured and still firm though there is nary a hard edge to be found and while this too cannot rival the other worldly 1999 (see herein), 2001 will one day be thought of as a genuinely excellent vintage for La Tâche. In short, aristocratic in every sense. Note that while this is certainly not yet quite ready for prime time, it is approaching the point where it could be opened with pleasure. Multiple and mostly consistent notes.
- Wine Cellar: Deep red. Multifaceted, very pure, very ripe nose of cassis, licorice, minerals and smoked meat. Then vibrant but tight and closed, showing considerably less volume today than the Romanee Saint-Vivant. Tannins are fine but youthfully austere, as there's less buffering mid-palate sweetness here. Inscrutable at present, but does not seem to be as exceptional in the context of the cru as the RSV. De Villaine ventured the opinion that La Tache and Richebourg are the most closed today among the estate's bottlings, noting that Richebourg has a higher percentage of younger vines and thus a less creamy texture.
Producer Information
Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, or DRC as it is commonly known, is easily Burgundy's best-known and most collectible wine producer. Based in the Burgundy village of Vosne-Romanée, the domaine sells wines from eight different grand cru vineyards that span the length of the Côte d'Or. The most famous comes from the eponymous Romanée-Conti vineyard, and on average is the most expensive wine in the world. The domaine predominately produces Pinot Noir-based wines from 28 hectares (69 acres) of grand cru vineyard. Alongside Romanée-Conti are La Tâche, Romanée-Saint-Vivant and Richebourg in Vosne-Romanée; plus Échezeaux and Grands Échezeaux bottlings. Fruit from Corton-Bressandes, Corton Clos du Roi and Corton Renardes is combined in a single Corton Grand Cru red. There are three white (Chardonnay) wines made. Only one of these, the Montrachet is made widely avilable. A Bâtard-Montrachet and a Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Nuits are not publically distributed. Of course, La Romanée-Conti is the domaine's most famous asset, and the amount of wine made from less than 2ha (5 acres) of land amounts to just 6000 bottles a year. The vineyard has a long history, dating back to the Abbey of Saint-Vivant in the 13th Century. It took on the Romanée name in 1631, and the Conti in 1760.Today, DRC is owned in part by the de Villaine family and in part by the Leroy family. Aubert de Villaine is the figurehead of the company now – although it was famously run by Lalou Bize-Leroy for a time, until a dispute saw her ousted from control.
