Reviews:
- Wine Advocate: Reveals stunning clarity and freshness in its black cherries, violets, minerals and sweet spices. This dense, richly-textured wine possesses staggering richness and elegance...
- Wine Critic: The 2006 Chianti Classico Castello di Ama flows with the essence of sweet perfumed fruit. Red cherries, raspberries, flowers and spices are intermingled with suggestions of tobacco, licorice and earthiness that linger in the background. The wine reveals incredible length, silky tannins that caress the palate all the way through to the close. In a word: Awesome. There’s not much else to say except that the Chianti Classico Castello di Ama is highly recommended. Castello di Ama is 80% Sangiovese plus Malvasia Nera, Merlot, and Canaiolo.
Producer Information
Castello di Ama is an Italian producer, found the Chianti Classico region in Tuscany. It is particularly known for its range of single-vineyard Gran Selezione red wines. The estate has about 75 hectares (185 acres) of vineyards, all within a two-miles radius of the village of Ama. Vineyard holdings include the San Lorenzo, La Casuccia and Bellavista plots with each producing a single-vineyard Gran Selezione DOCG.Bellavista is generally regarded as the most elegant, La Casuccia the richest and lushest, with San Lorenzo somewhere in the middle.Castello di Ama also produces a couple of IGT Toscana wines. Haiku is a combination of Sangiovese with Bordeaux varieties whilst a small plot of Merlot in the San Lorenzo vineyard is the source of L'Apparita.Red wines are fermented in vats and then undergo malolactic fermentation in barrels. All of the reds are aged for 12 months in barrique, except for Il Chiuso, which receives six months. Proportions of new oak vary between each wine as well as each vintage.
